Each Albany
middle school provides a number of in-house alternative programs. These
programs are targeted both at low achievers who are "quietly failing,"
as well as at disruptive students who might be guilty of
insubordination, fighting, rowdiness, vandalism--anything short of a
more serious safe schools violation.
In many cases,
the students are placed in smaller classes that are separate from the
mainstream. They also are given more productive alternatives to
short-term suspension.
