York State Learning Standards for the Visual Arts.
Philosophy
"I don't see art as a frill. Competence in art is part of being educated
and the arts in New York are a major part of the economic base."
--Richard Mills, former NYS commissioner of education
Art is a
conscious, human expression in visual form. It is the means of cultural
expression, record keeping and interpretation of the world. Art is a
visual from of communication essential to the understanding of and
participation in our increasingly complex society.
The district
creates a sequential art education program that ensures that students
develop a strong art foundation using the elements of art and the
principles of design as a basis for understanding.
