Summer Reading

2016 Summer Reading Program

Summer is a wonderful time to relax with a good book -- or several good books! Summer reading supports and builds on lessons of the previous school year and prepares students for success in the year ahead.

Albany High School students

Summer reading is required for students entering grades 9-12. Students my choose from a rich, diverse list of books carefully selected by our English Department and School Llibrarian Alicia Abdul.

As they are reading, students will complete a summer reading journal to be turned in to their English teacher in September. More information -- including grade-level book lists, a link to the summer reading journal and more specific assignments for students enrolled in Senior Electives, AP or IB English classes -- can be found on the Albany High Summer Reading site.

For elementary and middle-school students, the City School District of Albany ELA team is excited to announce that we are partnering with Albany Public Library once again this summer! Please read on to learn more.

Elementary, middle-school students

The City School District of Albany supports the Albany Public Library's Summer Reading Program for all students in elementary and middle school. Representatives from the library visited our schools throughout the spring to give book talks, help students get library cards and share strategies for selecting books that are "just right" reads for our students.

Each branch of the library has wonderful programming to offer students of all ages during the summer. The library shared a program guide with all students before the end of the school year in June.

Students who read 20 minutes a day and complete an activity sheet can enter weekly raffles at the library to win fun prizes. Please visit the Albany Public Library Summer Reading Program site for more information.

You also can check out these links for more summer reading resources and projects:

No matter your age, the most important thing to do is read this summer. Have a restful and relaxing vacation!
