Hall of Fame

Class of 2010 to be honored Oct. 8

The City School District of Albany will honor the Hall of Fame Class of 2010 on Oct. 8 as part of Homecoming Weekend.

The nomination deadline for the Class of 2010 was Feb. 1. The Selection Committee will meet in March to select the second class of inductees.

Established in 2009, the hall recognizes people in three categories for contributions or accomplishments that have made a difference to our schools:

• Alumni who excelled in their careers or through community involvement;

• Administrators, teachers and coaches; and

• Loyal and devoted supporters of the district.

Members can include athletes, teachers, performers, coaches, students, administrators, contributors or alumni who have gone on to significant accomplishments following graduation from Albany High School or the former Philip Schuyler High School.

The district held its first Hall of Fame inductions in October when it recognized the accomplishments of the following 14 extraordinary people. Click on the name of each one for a photo and biography:

• Glen Barker, former Major League Baseball player, Class of 1989

• Betty Barnette, Albany City Treasurer

• William Devane, actor, Class of 1957 (Philip Schuyler High School)

• Stefon Harris, jazz musician, Class of 1991

• Gerald D. Jennings, Albany mayor and former Albany High School vice principal

• Henry Landau, labor leader, Class of 1948 (Philip Schuyler High School)

• Charles Leigh Sr., former NFL player, Class of 1965

• Nona Richardson, athletic administrator, former volleyball player and coach, Class of 1978

• Norman Shapiro, community volunteer, Class of 1948 (Philip Schuyler High School)

• Nate Sutin, Albany High School boys’ varsity basketball coach, 1938-61

• Tony Tirino, youth soccer coordinator

• Pheoris West, scholar-athlete-artist, Class of 1968

• Charlayne Woodard, actress-playwright, Class of 1972

• Robert Wygant, athlete-educator-community volunteer, Class of 1948
