Schools
today face an unprecedented challenge--to bring all students up to a
level of achievement that was once reserved for only the top
students. The idea of a Regents diploma for all would have
previously been thought of as impossible. Now it is viewed as
imperative.
Indeed, all
students must now graduate with a Regents diploma; and the Regents exams
themselves require a much higher level of literacy and critical thinking
than those of the past.
In response
to this challenge, the City School District of Albany has adopted a
number of school reform initiatives aimed at creating high performing
schools.
All of these
initiatives have a proven record of success, especially in urban
schools. While they vary in detail, they all focus on the concept that
better teaching equals better results.

reform initiatives in Albany include:

ATLAS Communities. ATLAS, which stands for Authentic Teaching, Learning,
and Assessment for All Students, has been adopted by Arbor Hill
