A proposition for a no-cost facilities project to improve Giffen,
Abrookin and Albany High
|
Proposition #4
Shall the Board of Education be authorized to
(1) construct additions to and/or reconstruct portions of Giffen
Memorial Elementary School, Albany High School and Abrookin
Vocational-Technical Center, including in each case, site work
thereat and the acquisition of original furnishings, equipment,
machinery or apparatus required for the purpose for which such
buildings are to be used, at a maximum aggregate cost of
$11,400,000; (2) expend such sum for such purposes, (3) levy the
necessary tax therefore, to be levied and collected in annual
installments in such years and in such amounts as may be
determined by the Board of Education, taking into account state
aid, and (4) in anticipation of the collection of such tax,
issue bonds and notes of the district at one time or from time
to time in the principal amount not to exceed $11,400,000, and
levy a tax to pay the interest on said obligations when due?

When voters visit the polls Tuesday, May 17 to decide on the City School
District of Albany's $206.5 million budget proposal for 2011-12, a
separate resolution on the ballot (Proposition #4, see box at right)
will ask them to approve an $11.4 million facilities project for
three schools. The entire project will be done at no cost to
taxpayers.
The project
would expand the
cafeteria at Giffen Memorial Elementary
School, fix the roof, windows, and
heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and
electrical systems at AbrookinVocational-Technical Center, and add a
nine-classroom addition and other
improvements at Albany High School.
The entire project would be paid for by regular and EXCEL
building aid from the
state.
The district also will continue with the
$7.6 million no-cost facilities project at
Albany High that voters approved last
year, renovating bathrooms and locker
rooms, updating ceilings and lighting, and replacing carpet in
classrooms.
There will be two more propositions on the May 17 ballot related to the
school district:

Proposition #2 will ask the public to authorize the sale of the
district building at 270-272 Central Ave., home to the Buildings and
Grounds staff. The staff and all equipment are relocating to the
former Harriet Gibbons High School (now Central Registration) at 75
Watervliet Ave. Proposition #2 asks voters to approve the sale for
not less than $100,000.

Prroposition #3
will ask voters
to authorize the district to sell the former Philip Livingston
Magnet Academy for at least $3.25 million. In May 2010, voters overwhelmingly approved a proposition authorizing
the district to sell the property for at least $4.5 million. However,
due to market conditions it is necessary to lower the minimum selling
price.
