A proposition to sell the former Schulyer Elementary School/Albany High School

Proposition #3

Shall the Board of Education of the Albany City School District be authorized to sell the real property commonly known as Philip Schuyler (Elementary School), located at 141 Western Avenue, Albany, NY for a price not less than $2,000,000, less usual and customary closing costs?

Voters overwhelmingly approved the sale of the former Philip Schuyler Elementary School/Albany High School for at least $2 million May 15.

The measure passed 3,723-405 (90 percent approval). A buyer has not been identified for this building.

The building, on North Lake Avenue between Washington and Western avenues, served as Albany High from 1913 until January 1974, and then as Schuyler Elementary School until the district repurposed it as a swing space facility for several schools during the major facilities project during the first decade of this century. The building currently is home to the Alternative Learning Center, which includes the district's alternative-education programs for middle- and high-school students. It will continue to house those programs in 2012-13 while the building is for sale.

There was one more proposition on the May 15 ballot related to the school district, which voters also overwhelmingly approved:

  • Proposition #2 asked the public to authorize the sale of the former Sunshine Building in Lincoln Park for not less than $125,000.
