Sixth grade students at
Arbor Hill Elementary School will travel to Washington D.C. in April
where they will tour the White House, the Pentagon, the Smithsonian
Institute and experience a night light tour of the Washington Monument.
The trip, scheduled
during school recess from April 9-13. The 32 students will be
accompanied by eight teachers and staff from the elementary school.
"This DC trip will
be a social studies lesson well beyond anything that our sixth grade
children can get from a book, while sitting in their classrooms. We
would like to thank everyone who has contributed to making this trip
possible, especially our parents, who have found a way to come up with
their share of the funding. This is a very ambitious undertaking, but
somehow trip organizer Ms. Nobles and other staff members working with
her have always been able to find a way to accomplish these types of
experiences for the children."
In addition to
traditional Washington D.C. stops such as the White House and Pentagon,
the tentative itinerary includes a visit to historic Union Station, the
National Zoo, and a guided tour of Philadelphia. Students will also
visit Morgan State University in Baltimore, and Howard University in
Washington D.C.
Students and staff have
been fundraising to raise the money for the trip. Their efforts include
sponsoring a winter ball and holding a coin drive.
In addition, local
philanthropist Charles Touhey, Arbor Hill Elementary School music
teacher Ian Golub and his family, Wal-Mart, and Al Tabari Court of
Capital City Lodge in Albany have made contributions to the trip.
The school is continuing to explore ways to raise money to defray the
cost for students and families.
“We realize this is a
considerable undertaking,” said teacher Felicia Nobles, who is helping
to coordinate the trip. “However, I know it will be worth it. The
experience will broaden students’ horizons, and they will bring their
knowledge and enthusiasm about the trip back to our entire school
community.”
