School student and her "Big Sister" honored
Albany High School student
LaMecca Butler's big sister through Big Brothers Big Sisters of the
Capital Region has
been named
the National Big Sister of the Year.
LaMecca and Delmar resident Betsy Gorman-Bernardi,
shown from left to right, will travel to Indianapolis in late
June to accept the honor at the national Big Brothers Big Sisters conference.
They have been a pair for eight years, since LaMecca was 9 years
old. On Wednesday,
June 21, the school district and the local Big Brothers Big Sisters
chapter celebrated the award at Albany High School.
Superintendent Eva Joseph, Big Brothers/Big Sisters Executive
Director Karen Brown, School Board President and Big Brothers/Big
Sisters board member Edward H. Brown Jr., and County Executive
Michael Breslin, as well as LaMecca and Betsy made some remarks on
the special occasion.
