The Girls Varsity swimming team had another great season, as it finished
seventh overall at sectionals and sent two athletes to the New York
State championships. Mary Ann Gaffuri and Erica Wasserbach (pictured
at left) each competed at the state championships in swimming and
diving, respectively.
This was MaryAnn's 4th
straight year qualifying for the state meet, and she swam in both the 50
and 100 freestyle. After a 2nd and a 3rd place in the 50 and 100,
respectively, at the Secitonals, May Ann was faced with the best NY
state had to ffer, and finished 23rd in the 50, and 31st in the 100.
Erica Wasserbach was the
first girl diver Albany High School has sent in more than 10 years of
competition. Finishing 5th at Sectional Championships with a State
qualifying score gave Erica the opportunity she had been looking for to
attend states. As a senior and at states for the first time, she got to
work and finished in a very respectable 18th place.
Next year, MayAnn will look
to build on her accolades and rise in the state rankings, as Erica looks
toward college and the challenges that await her.
