Kindergarten Registration

Beginning a journey, building a foundation

Kindergarten registration for the 2018-19 school year begins April 30, and the City School District of Albany has put in place additional options to make registration easier for families.

If your child currently is enrolled in a prekindergarten program in one of the district's 12 elementary schools, he or she automatically will be registered for kindergarten in the district for next school year.

  • Students in pre-K at Albany School of Humanities (ASH), the Dual Language Program at Delaware Community School, Montessori Magnet School, and Thomas O’Brien Academy of Science and Technology (TOAST) will continue to attend kindergarten at the same school.

  • Students who attend pre-K in their neighborhood school also will be automatically enrolled and continue in the same school.

  • Students who attend pre-K outside their neighborhood school zone automatically will be registered to attend kindergarten in their neighborhood school based on the current home address on file.

Registration is not automatic for students who attend pre-K in a program outside of one of the district’s 12 elementary schools. If your child is in one of these community-based pre-K programs not located in one of our schools, you must register your child for kindergarten at Central Registration, located in Harriet Gibbons Student Services Center at 75 Watervliet Ave.

Be sure to register if your child is not currently enrolled in pre-K in one of our 12 elementary schools. Screening for all new enrollees will take place in June. New families will be contacted to set up an appointment.

Registrations will continue to be accepted at Central Registration from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday on an ongoing basis. Click the highlighted text to find out documents you need to register your child.

Students who live more than 1.5 miles from school can receive yellow bus transportation. This will not happen automatically. Download a transportation request form here and return it to the district's Transportation Office, located in Harriet Gibbons Student Services Center at 75 Watervliet Ave. You also can call the Tras

If you have any questions about kindergarten registration, please call Central Registration at (518) 475-6125 or any of our elementary schools.

The district gives families the option to enroll a child in a school other than their neighborhood zone school. For more information about this open enrollment option, click the highlighted text or call the district's Pupil Personnel Office at (518) 475-6130. Those who wish to open enroll their child outside theiir neighborhood school zone should complete a request. Please note that no decision regarding open enrollment will be made until late summer at the earliest.
