Educational Program

Curriculum
Public School 18 teachers follow the standard school curriculum recommended by the New York State (NYS) Education Department. Each instructional area has been formulated with certain NYS curriculum objectives as guidelines. Our daily studies cover reading, spelling, English, and writing as part of our English Language Arts (ELA) program. Other subjects include math, social studies, and science/health.

Homework
Homework assignments are part of your child's education. Homework is assigned at the discretion of your child's teacher. Cooperation between parent and teacher is encouraged, and parents should check with their child's teacher regarding homework routines. Parents who show an interest in the quality of their child's work will encourage their child to not only take pride in their work but also to be responsible for getting assignments in one time. A quiet place to work and a regularly scheduled time for homework is also helpful in developing good work habits.

Character education
School 18 has established many initiatives to promote positive student behavior and build strong character. Each month we select and highlight a specific character trait for students to focus on and the trait is reinforced through daily announcements and celebrated at the end of each month at a character education assembly.

Our Rising Stars program is designed to introduce each child to the students and staff and promote a strong sense of community. An attendance trophy is awarded quarterly to the classroom with the best attendance record. Once a week, one student from each class who has exhibited excellent behavior and perfect attendance will be selected as Kids for Character. And each month, each class selects a Student of the Month who, along with our Rising Stars, are recognized at the monthly assemblies. Students of the Month also attend the monthly breakfast celebration sponsored by the PTA.
