Albany High School to host fourth annual

CDPHP Invitational over Thanksgiving weekend

Albany High School once again will host the CDPHP Invitational Boys' Basketball Tournament over Thanksgiving weekend, welcoming Bishop Gibbons High School from Schenectady and two teams from New York City.

 

The fourth annual event Nov. 28-29 also will honor eight members of the Albany High Class of 2004 who went on to competitive and academic success in college, as well as the 1984-85 and 1985-86 boys' basketball teams that were among the top teams in New York state.

 

Individual honorees will be Meg Cusick (Tufts University/softball), Megan Doherty (Elmira College/soccer), Endri Kita (Rochester Institute of Technology/soccer), Jake Fromer (Tufts University/track), Kelsie Moran (Buffalo State College/soccer), Jenny O'Connell (Ithaca College/ultimate Frisbee) Alex Paley (University of Miami/track) and Heather Smith (University of Maryland/ultimate Frisbee).

 

Members of the 1984-85 and 1985-86 boys' basketball teams expected to attend include All-American Elander Lewis, who went on to play at St. John's University and Virginia Commonwealth University, Will Foley (Boston College) and Derek Johnson (Virginia Union University). Mr. Johnson currently is the home-school coordinator at William S. Hackett Middle School. Additional team members who also are district employees also are expected to attend.

 

The tournament begins Friday, Nov. 28 with first-round games.

 

In the first game at 5:30 p.m., Bishop Gibbons, the 2008 Section II Class A champion, will face Frederick Douglass Academy. The Albany High grads will be honored at a ceremony following the first game.

 

In the second game at 7:30 p.m., Albany takes on the High School of Art and Design. The Falcons are beginning their second season under coach John McClement.

 

On Saturday, Nov. 29, the third-place game tips off at 1 p.m., followed by the championship at 3 p.m.
