ALBANY, N.Y. (June 20, 2008) -- Albany High School baseball coach Joey
DiPiazza was named the Capital Region coach of the year for large
schools in the annual Times Union selection of spring sports
standouts.
Track teammates Chris Fagan and Kareem Morris were named first-team
all-stars, and baseball teammates Michael Hughes and Pat Landers earned
second-team recognition.
In
his third season, Mr. DiPiazza guided the Falcons to a 17-6
regular-season record and a second-place finish in the Big 10 (13-3
league record) behind only unbeaten LaSalle, the state’s top-ranked team
heading into the playoffs. Albany’s playoff berth this season was its
first since 1999.
Michael and Pat, both junior pitchers, were key performers in Albany’s
baseball success. Michael led the team with seven wins and a 1.17 ERA,
and Pat had six wins and a 2.12 ERA.
In
boys’ track, Chris and Kareem were among Section II’s most dominant
performers.
Chris, a senior, had the area’s best long jump of the season (23 feet, ½
inch), which also was among the 10 best in the state this season. He
also was the Section II champion in the 400 hurdles.
Kareem, a sophomore, had the state’s sixth-best time in the 100 meters
(10.8 seconds). He won the 100 and 200 at the Section II meet and
qualified for the state meet in the 100.
