Albany High basketball teams

close seasons with strong playoff performances

The Albany High School basketball teams turned in solid playoff performances to close the 2009-10 season following strong regular seasons.

The boys' team finished third in the Big 10 and enjoyed its deepest playoff run in four years before falling 64-43 to Big 10-champion CBA at the Times Union Center on March 2. The Falcons (13-8) beat Columbia at home in the first round of the playoffs Feb. 25 and then overwhelmed Queensbury 82-43 in the quarterfinals at Hudson Valley Community College two days later. Amari Gaddy had 29 points in the win over Queensbury.

Senior Jeremic Bennett closed his career with 18 points to lead the Falcons in the semifinal loss to CBA. It was the Falcons' best playoff showing since losing the 2006 Class AA championship game. You can check out more coverage of Bennett and the Falcons in the March 2 Times Union.

The girls' team finished second in the Big 10 behind the young tandem of eighth-grader Breahanda Stratton and freshman Emia Willingham-Hurst. Senior Fern Beetle-Moorcroft and junior Kelsey Greene also were key contributors.

Like the boys, the Lady Falcons opened the playoffs at home with a first-round win over Columbia, with Willingham-Hurst leading the way with 18 points in a 61-45 victory. The Lady Falcons (14-6) dropped a quarterfinal heartbreaker for the second year in a row two days later, falling 63-60 in overtime to Shaker at Colonie High School. Willingham-Hurst had 27 points in that game, and Stratton added 15.

You can read more about the Lady Falcons' successful season in the Jan. 22 Times Union.
