Boys' indoor track
standouts
named area all-stars
Five members of the Albany High School boys' indoor track team have been
named area all-stars by the Times Union.
Named to first team are junior Dashawn Gates in the 55-meter high
hurdles, senior Alex Schettino in the pole vault and Gates,
senior Kareem Morris, junior Jaah-Mel Arrington and senior
Evan Laccetti in the 800-meter relay.
The 800 relay team won the Section II state qualifying meet and placed
seventh in the state championships at Cornell University. It went on to
place 27th at the national championship meet in New York City March
12-14, with Matt Wu substituting for Gates.
Pole vaulter Schettino -- who broke a 29-year-old school record in
December,
beat it by an inch at the Big 10 Championships
and shattered it again a month later by clearing 14
feet
6 inches at the state qualifiers
-- placed 15th in the state with 13-0 and 26th in the nation with
13-025.
Morris, who dominated Albany High and Capital Region track teams for the
past three years, was named to second team in both the 55 and the long
jump. He capped his high school indoor-track career with a 17-place
national finish in long jump (21.0725) and also competed in the
200-meter relay.
