Albany High soccerista Katie Michaelis
accepts scholarship at Division II
Mercyhurst
Albany
High School senior Katie Michaelis on March 24 signed a ceremonial
letter of intent to attend Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa.
A first-team
Times Union All-Star last season, Michaelis also earned an
academic scholarship, which, combined with her athletic aid, will
provide a full tuition scholarship to the Division II school. Michaelis signed the required paperwork during a news
conference in the school’s College Center, flanked by her parents and
surrounded by her teammates.
Michaelis’ 19 goals helped the Albany High girls’ varsity soccer team
clinch its first outright Big 10 title ever in 2009. She was one of the
Capital Region’s top scorers, leading the Lady Falcons to a 12-5 record
overall and 8-2 in the Big 10. Postseason, in addition to her all-area
selection, Michaelis was named Big 10 MVP and third-team All-State.
The
Mercyhurst women’s soccer team ranked fifth last year in the NCAA
Division II Atlantic Region. The Lakers finished the 2009 season with a
12-7-1 record, tying for second in PSAC West at 9-4-1. Also in 2009, the
team posted a winning record for its 22nd consecutive year –
the fourth-longest streak in Division II women’s soccer history.
