Soccer standout Michaelis named All-State

Daniels and Wu join her as first-team Times Union All-Stars

Senior forward Katie Michaelis has been named a third-team state all-star in girls' soccer, adding to a growing list of postseason accolades that includes being named a first-team Times Union All-Star and the Big 10 MVP.

Michaelis' 19 goals helped the Albany High School girls' varsity soccer team clinch its first outright Big 10 title in 2009. She was one of the Capital Region's top scorers, leading the Lady Falcons to a 12-5 record overall and 8-2 in the conference. She scored the Lady Falcons’ only goal and also converted a penalty kick during the team’s heart-wrenching overtime shootout loss to Colonie in the Section II playoffs.

"Katie played a vital role in our first championship," coach Pete Anderson told the Times Union. "She's a dedicated asset on the field and in the classroom as well."

In boys' soccer, senior forward Owen Daniels and senior defender Matt Wu also were named first-team Times Union All-Stars.

With Daniels on offense and Wu on defense, the boys' varsity soccer team garnered a Big 10 championship with an unbeaten regular season. Daniels led his team and the Big 10 with 12 goals and nine assists and also was named to the all-conference first team. Coach Dave Weiss said Daniels was the team's offensive catalyst.

"He stepped up big when needed it," Weiss told the newspaper.

Wu, the boys' Big 10 MVP, was one of the top defenders in the area and the anchor for a defense that allowed just four goals during the regular season.

"He can play out wide. If one of our backs was down, he could step up and play the center. He's going to be very, very hard to replace," Weiss said.
