Albany High junior Shawn Berman wins Section II wrestling
championship
Albany High junior
Shawn Berman continued his outstanding season Feb. 12 by winning
the Section II Division I wrestling championship at 96 pounds.
Berman, who set a new school record for victories on
his way to the Class A title Feb. 5, swept his four matches in the
large-school division at the Section II meet to improve his season
record to 41-1 and his career record to 109-19. Berman (pictured at

advances to the state tournament for the second year in a row. Last
year he became the first Albany High wrestler in eight years to make it
to states.
The state tournament will be held in Albany at the
Times Union Center on Feb. 25-26.
“Shawn is a very hard-working young man,” coach
Nick Lettieri said after Berman won his third consecutive Class A title
Feb. 5. “He is extremely coachable and is a well-rounded, good
kid – funny, friendly and intelligent.”
Berman broke the school record of 103 career wins set
by Greg Jones in 1986.
Mr. Jones now is principal of New Scotland Elementary School. Berman is
105-19 in his wrestling career. You can read more about him online in a
Jan. 30
Times Union article.
Berman was one of three Falcons to compete in the
Section II tournament Feb. 5. Ta-Kiem Cowan took fourth place at 145 pounds,
and DeShon Tucker took sixth place at 189.
