Hughes, Harris help Falcons return to the postseason

The wait is over for Albany High School’s baseball team. Michael Hughes and Justin Harris made sure of that May 7.

Michael struck out 14 and allowed just three hits and one unearned run in 5 2/3 innings and Justin drove in three runs to lead the Falcons to a 4-1 win over Bishop Maginn at Bleecker Stadium. It was Albany’s eighth Big 10 victory of the season, guaranteeing the Falcons their first trip to the Section II playoffs since 1999.

The Falcons went on to a second-place finish in the Big 10 after their 8-6 win over CBA on May 19. Only LaSalle, unbeaten as of May 20 and ranked No. 1 in the state, finished ahead of Albany in the conference.

In the playoff clincher May 7, Michael shackled Maginn’s offense while Harris delivered an RBI single in the first and a two-run double in the fifth. Jevonte Osterhout added an RBI single in the three-run fifth as the Falcons snapped a 1-1 tie. Steven Hotaling got the final four outs, two on strikeouts, to earn the save.

Check out the team's complete results and upcoming schedule at the Albany High baseball Web site. You also can read more about the Falcons' resurgence in the April 28 Times Union.
