Albany High senior competes in state
swimming meet
Senior swimming standout Maryann Gaffuri,
Albany High School's only
athlete to reach state competition this fall,
competed in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle Nov. 16 at the New York State
High School Swimming Championships on Long Island.
After finishing second in both events in
Section II, Maryann capped an outstanding season with top-25 finishes in
the preliminaries at the Nassau County Aquatic
Center in East Meadow. In the 100-free, she tied for 25th with a time of
55.26 seconds. In the 50-free, she missed qualifying for Saturday's
finals by three-hundredths of a second, finishing 22nd in 25.14 seconds.
The top 20 qualifiers advanced to the finals.
Maryann also was recognized at the state
meet as a unanimous winner of the Section II Sportsmanship Award. The
award is voted on by all coaches in each section.
"It's a very prestigious award," said coach
Michael Panetta. "It proves she is more than just an athlete who is
self-serving. She is there for the entire team regardless of her
performance."
