The federal Safe
Schools/Healthy Students Initiative ($6,000,000 over the next four
years) will fund A-PLUS, the Albany Partnership for Learning and
Uniting Services. Together with public and private sector agencies and
organizations covering the areas of education, mental health, juvenile
justice, substance abuse, youth development, early childhood education,
family advocacy, and academia, CSDA will establish Full-Service
Community Schools at Hackett Middle School and North Albany Academy,
where children and families can access high-quality social, emotional
and mental support services. A-PLUS will also introduce
evidence-based gang prevention and substance abuse prevention programs;
expand and enhance the School Resource Officer program; strengthen the
Truancy Abatement Program; create a Youth Leadership Council; and
implement a Parent Engagement Program.
The
NYGEAR UP Supplement Program
($99,000 for three years) will benefit
AHS students participating in
the New York Gaining Early
Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program. This supplemental
grant will fund a system of support resources that include a wide-range
of field trips, visits to Historically Black Colleges, SAT Prep
sessions, and One-on-One College Application and Scholarship Sessions.
The Mentor Teacher
Internship Program (MTIP) ($72,033 for one year) will fund the
formal 1:1 mentorship experience of approximately 15 teachers in their
first or second years in the field. Experienced, seasoned teachers
chosen by the district’s Mentor Selection Committee will serve as the
mentors. The goal of the program is to provide experiences which will
enable new teachers to maintain positive attitudes toward teaching and
remain in the profession.
The Bilingual/ESL
Supplementary Intervention Program ($24,999 for one year) will
enable Albany High School to introduce a new Out-of-School-Time program
for English Language Learners. Activities will include an afterschool
academic program; monthly community outings to local museums, theaters,
parks and music venues for students and their families; and cultural
events for students, families, school personnel and community members.
The Local Government
Records Management Improvement Fund ($24,675 for one year) will
significantly improve the district’s email management practices in
accordance with state laws. The grant will be used to purchase new
software that will provide a reliable, effective mechanism for retention
of electronic records as official copies.
Thanks to
Picturing America, a project of the National Endowment of the
Humanities, each of CSDA’s school libraries will receive a total of 20
high-quality, laminated reproductions (approximately 24” x 36”) to hang
throughout the school; an illustrated Teachers Resource Book; and access
to the Picturing America website.
