Lottery Process
The City School District of Albany's lottery for
enrollment at Stephen & Harriet Myers Middle School was conducted
using the same computer system the district has used to enroll
students in its magnet school for more than 10 years.
The lottery
provides each school with a balanced and equitable distribution of
students. It uses random number sequences based on a set of criteria to
select students. For the Myers Middle School lottery, the following
criteria were set by the district to determine who would be enrolled at
the new middle school:
-
Neighborhood preference (students living within one-half mile of the
school
-
Sibling
preference (students who have a sibling attending the school, please
note that siblings must live in the same household)
-
Student's prior academic achievement in math and English Language
Arts (based on results from TONYSS, New York State Assessments, and
the district's interval assessments)
-
Socio-economic status (from free and reduced-price lunch
information)
-
Prior
school enrollment to ensure students from all parts of the city are
enrolled.
Grades 6 and
7 students participated in a "parent opt in" lottery, meaning that
parents went through a formal application process to enter the lottery
for Myers Middle School.
Grade 8
students participated in a "parent opt out" lottery. All students
entering eighth grade in the 2005-2006 school year were automatically
entered into the lottery. However, parents who wanted to keep their
child in his or her current school were given the opportunity to decline
entering the lottery. The Board of Education decided to open Myers
Middle School to grade 8 in an effort to support small schools and to be
proactive with regard to No Child Left Behind.
Four lottery
drawings were held to fully enroll students at Myers Middle School.
