Open
enrollment is a school choice option through which parents can enroll their
children in a school other than their neighborhood school. It
applies to non-magnet schools only.
Every spring
the school district determines the schools and grade levels where space
is anticipated for the following school year. The limited number of
spaces are filled through an open enrollment lottery. Siblings of
students currently enrolled in a particular school are given preference
and may be admitted without going through the lottery process, provided
space is available.
To apply for
open enrollment in the 2008-09 school year, parents must complete the
open enrollment application
and return it by 4:30 p.m. on June 27 to the Office of Pupil Personnel Services,
City School District of Albany, Sunshine Building, Lincoln Park, Albany
NY 12202. No applications will be accepted after that date. Applications
received after the June 27 deadline will be placed on a waiting list.
An open enrollment lottery is held early in
the summer. Acceptance
into a school lottery is determined by availability of space. Occasionally, students are
placed due to extenuating circumstances, but only after careful review
by the superintendent of schools.
