Three Albany High seniors selected

for 2008 Scholars Recognition Program

ALBANY, N.Y. (May 9, 2008) -- Three Albany High School seniors have been recognized by the Times Union's 2008 Scholars Recognition Program.

Rachel Gorman, Aminah McGill and Deja Smith were selected among this year's group of outstanding Capital Region students. Nominated by their teachers, the scholars are recognized for scholarship, leadership and service to their schools and communities.

Teacher Ralph Pape nominated Rachel for the award. Enrolled in Albany High's prestigious International Baccalaureate program and a National Honor Society member as well as an AP scholar, Rachel "is a caring, giving young woman who interacts positively with ever segment of our diverse student population and whose excellence reflects well on public education," Mr. Pape wrote.

Greg Baker -- affectionately known as G Bake by some of his students -- nominated Aminah. He noted that she has excelled in a rigorous academic program and will graduate with a 91 average. "She is an integral member of the school community, leading the drill team to success and helping it grow from a club to a competitive sport," Mr. Baker said. "She is a young woman who can balance a busy schedule with tremendous success."

Wan Chen nominated Deja. "Deja has consistently chosen rigorous academic courses and will graduate in the top 10 percent of the Class of 2008," she wrote. "She remains focused while taking on many commitments including senior class vice president, Key Club, Biennial Debutante Cotilion participant and Science and Technology Entry Program. She also volunteers in many community services."

The students were recognized in a special section published in the May 8 Times Union and will be honored at the annual awards ceremony.

The City School District of Albany serves approximately 8,600 students in 18 elementary, middle and high schools. The district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students in addition to neighborhood schools. The district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in the 21st century.
