Board of Education seeking volunteers to fill vacant seat

ALBANY, N.Y. (April 11, 2008) -- The Board of Education is seeking volunteers interested in filling the board seat vacated last month by the resignation of Teneka Frost. The term would last until the general election in November.

City residents interested in being considered for the position should send a letter of interest and resume or list of qualifications to the City School District of Albany, Academy Park, Albany, NY 12207. All materials should be sent to the attention of Catherine Cutting, clerk of the board. For more information, call 475-6010. Correspondence must be received or postmarked on or before April 23.

The board currently is operating with six members, one short of its full complement. Board President William Barnette said the board is interested in filling the vacancy as quickly as possible.

A candidate chosen to fill the vacancy until November also would have the option of running for election for the permanent four-year term. The winning candidate in the November election will be seated immediately rather than waiting until the traditional swearing-in date in January.

The City School District of Albany serves approximately 8,600 students in 18 elementary, middle and high schools. The district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students in addition to neighborhood schools. The district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in the 21st century.
