ALBANY, N.Y. (April 25, 2008)
-- The Board of Education will invite
all candidates who have expressed interest in filling the vacant board
seat to make brief presentations at its May 6 meeting to allow community
members an opportunity to hear from each individual.
Eleven people submitted materials by the
board’s April 23 deadline to be considered for the position; one
candidate later withdrew. At its
meeting April 24 at Delaware Community School, the board outlined its
next steps in the process to fill the seat vacated in March.
Each of the candidates will have up to
three minutes to make a presentation to the board and community during
the May 6 meeting at Albany High School. Neither the board nor the
public will have an opportunity to ask questions of the candidates.
The board then will discuss this personnel
matter in an executive session before its May 15 meeting at Pine Hills
Elementary School and may consider a motion to appoint a new member
during that night’s meeting.
The board currently is operating with six
members, one short of its full complement. A candidate chosen to fill
the vacancy would serve until the November election results are
official. The winning candidate in that election then will be seated on
the board through December 31 and sworn into the full four-year term at
the first board meeting in January.
Following are the 10 individuals who have
submitted materials to fill the board vacancy:
The City School
District of Albany serves approximately 8,600 students in 18
elementary, middle and high schools. The district includes several
magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic
opportunities for students in addition to neighborhood schools. The
district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities
project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary
and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is
to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students
succeed in the 21st century. |
