Myers Middle School students take their classroom to the Hudson River on a week-long journey of discovery

ALBANY, N.Y. (September 19, 2007) -- Six Myers Middle School students returned to port in Albany on Wednesday following a week-long voyage on the Hudson River with their peers from three other school districts.

Students Mike Allinger, Grant Dias-Carlson, Emma Kipniss, Shiava Morris, Erica Portelli and Kristian Uzhca were joined by Myers seventh-grade teachers Dan Morency and Jennifer O’Leary on an adventure into science, history and life. Joined by middle school students from Rensselaer, Taconic Hills and Oneida, the Myers group sailed from Verplank, N.Y., on Sept. 13 and returned to great fanfare and a welcome-back event at the Corning Preserve Pump Station in Albany.

They sailed aboard the Halfmoon, a replica of the ship Henry Hudson sailed to discover New Netherlands on the journey that first put what is now Albany on the map in 1609. The welcoming ceremony on Sept. 19 commemorated the 398th anniversary of Hudson’s landing on the site that would become Fort Orange, and later, the city of Albany.

The City School District of Albany serves almost 9,400 students in 19 elementary, middle and high schools. The district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students in addition to neighborhood schools. The district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in the 21st century.
