Falcon Pride earns Albany High School a victory

in radio contest and a special night for the Senior Prom

ALBANY, N.Y. (April 23, 2008) -- Thanks to a flood of Falcon Pride and local radio station JAMZ-96.3, the Senior Prom will be an even bigger event for the Albany High School Class of 2008.

Albany High is the winner in the JAMZ “High School Challenge 2008,” knocking out Shenendehowa High School in the final round of the month-long contest. The Class of 2008 won a DJ for the prom, which will be held May 31 at Michael’s Banquet House in Latham, and prize money toward decorations. There also is the possibility of a national recording artist making an appearance at the prom as well. Stay tuned!

Led by Class Advisor Stephanie Sherman and Class President Chris Huntley, students from all grade levels, teachers and staff came together to push Albany High over the top with a flood of calls and text messages.

“The kids are so excited,” Ms. Sherman said. “The whole school was cheering. It was one of those great moments.”

More than 30 Capital Region schools participated in the contest, which began March 10 and ended with Tuesday night’s on-air announcement. One school was knocked out at a time based on calls and text messages from each of the participating schools. The “final” vs. Shen took place over April break.

The City School District of Albany serves approximately 8,600 students in 18 elementary, middle and high schools. The district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students in addition to neighborhood schools. The district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in the 21st century.
