Superintendent Eva C. Joseph, Ed.D.,

addresses safety and security planning for the new school year

ALBANY, NY (August 20, 2007) -- City School District of Albany Superintendent Eva C. Joseph, Ed.D., issued the following statement today regarding the district's ongoing planning process to ensure a safe, orderly learning environment throughout the district in 2007-08.

"
Shahied Oliver’s death is a tragedy for our entire community. Our thoughts are with his family as they cope with this devastating loss.

"The safety and security of all of our students always is a top priority for us in the City School District of Albany. We have been working hard this summer continuing to review our procedures and implement new policies to ensure a safe, orderly learning environment.

"There are many changes our students and their families will see when the school year begins. As examples, we have proposed updates to our code of conduct that further clarify our expectations of our students and our responsibility as a school district to enforce those policies, and we are working closely with local law enforcement officials to better understand tensions that exist in our community so we can head off problems before they begin."

The City School District of Albany serves almost 9,400 students in 19 elementary, middle and high schools. The district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students in addition to neighborhood schools. The district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in the 21st century.
