Albany School of Humanities raises money for

American Heart Association while jumping rope

ALBANY, N.Y. (April 8, 2009) -- The Albany School of Humanities (ASH) is fresh off the heels of a week of jumping rope for the Jump Rope for Heart program.

The program, coordinated by physical education teachers Leslie Bogucki and Steve Smith, helped raise $9,600 for the American Heart Association. Throughout the 13 years that ASH has participated in the Jump Rope for Heart program, the school has raised $120,000 for the American Heart Association, making it one of the leading fundraisers in the northeast.

In physical education classes, students from kindergarten through third grade jumped rope throughout the week, culminating with a school-wide “Big Jump Party” held on April 3. In all, 236 students participated.

The “Big Jump Party” featured competitions like the “Iron Man,” “Limbo Rope,” “Fancy Feet,” and “In the Front Door and Back,” along with Double Dutch demonstrations and group routines.

The City School District of Albany serves approximately 8,400 students in 18 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students. The district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in the 21st century.
