ALBANY, N.Y. (April 20, 2009) -- The Albany High School Select Choir
will perform with Albany Pro Musica in a special concert event April 22
at The College of St. Rose Massry Center for the Arts.
Each group will present a
set of its own music, and then will perform five pieces together. One of
those pieces, "Cantique de Jean Racine" by Gabriel Foure, also will
feature members of the Albany High Orchestra and Wind Ensemble.
"This
is such a huge opportunity for our students and for the district to
showcase the incredible work our students accomplish," said Albany High
choral director Brendan Hoffman. "It is going to be a truly incredible
concert."
You can read more about the performance in
Albany Pro Musica
Director David Griggs-Janower's Times Union blog.
The Albany High School
Select Choir is a group of 40-50 singers who demonstrate advanced
musicianship and maturity. Singers must be recommended for participation
based on their music reading ability, voice quality and attitude.
This group has been
featured with other top choirs in the area in the PBS special “Celebrate
America,” and will be performing at the upcoming New York State School
Music Association Major Organization Choral Festival. Many individual
members have received high marks at NYSSMA solo festivals, and members
have been selected to participate in area all-state choirs and received
Albany Pro Musica apprenticeships.
Albany Pro Musica was founded
in 1981. Under the direction of David Griggs-Janower, it is the Capital
Region’s premier choral group.
The City
School District of Albany serves approximately 8,300 students in 18
elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood
schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as
well as other innovative academic opportunities for students. The
district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities
project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and
middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to
provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in
the 21st century.
