“Chicago: The Musical,” a sassy send-up of the Jazz Age via Broadway,
comes to Albany for four performances in April courtesy of the
award-winning Albany High School Theatre Ensemble.
Featuring Bob
Fosse’s legendary choreography and songs like “All That Jazz,” “Razzle
Dazzle” and “Cellblock Tango,” the musical tells the story of two
accused murderesses who seek celebrity as they try to stay out of the
electric chair.
Albany High will
present the show Thursday-Saturday, April 2-4, at 7 p.m., with a 2 p.m.
matinee Sunday, April 5. All shows are at the school’s theater, 700
Washington Ave. You can read more about the production in
the March 29
Times Union.
Tickets for adults
are $15 at the door. Students and seniors are $5. All seats are general
admission.
The show,
originally produced in 1975, was revived on Broadway in 1996 and is
still playing, make it the longest-running revival in Broadway history.
A 2002 film version starring Rene Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and
Richard Gere won Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (Zeta-Jones’
Velma) honors at the Academy Awards.
The
Theatre Ensemble production of this John Kander-Fred Ebb classic is
directed by drama teacher Ward Dales – his fourth musical at Albany High
(“Carousel,” “Oliver” and last year’s “Pippin”). Vocal direction is by
choral music teacher Brendan Hoffman, and dance numbers have been staged
by local choreographer Greg Marsh. The orchestra is under the baton of
band director Keith Reynolds and features several Empire State Youth
Orchestra musicians.
The City School
District of Albany serves approximately 8,400 students in 18
elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood
schools, the district includes several
magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic
opportunities for students. The
district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities
project to newly
build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary
and middle
schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is
to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students
succeed in the 21st century. |
