Giffen students teaming up with Disney on Ice,

regional food bank to help brighten the holidays

ALBANY, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2008) -- Giffen Memorial Elementary School is teaming up with Disney On Ice and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York to help Capital Region residents enjoy a happier holiday season this year.

Giffen students are holding a food drive at the school, collecting food from students, teachers, staff and the community to donate to the food bank. The school’s second-grade students also are creating posters promoting the food drive and raising awareness of hunger. The posters will be on display at the school and at the Times Union Center during the run of Disney on Ice presents 100 Years of Magic from Dec. 17-21.

Giffen’s second-graders will present their donations to the food bank at the Times Union Center and will attend a private skating performance with the cast of Disney On Ice presents 100 Years of Magic. Each of the students also will receive two tickets to one of the show’s regular performances.

“The opportunity to learn how to be active members of their community and to help others is a terrific experience for our students,” said Giffen second-grade teacher Shannon Smith. “We also are grateful for this wonderful opportunity to see the Disney on Ice performance. Many of our students might not have a chance to see a show like this, and it will be a fun holiday experience for everyone!”

The City School District of Albany serves approximately 8,400 students in 18 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students. The district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in the 21st century.
