ALBANY, N.Y. (April 23, 2009) --
Four William S. Hackett Middle School
sixth-graders are this year’s city-wide science champions in their age
group!
Brendan Murphy, William McTague, Daniel
Lacetti and Jordan Garces (pictured at right, L-R) created a catapult project for their school
science fair that also won first place for grades 4-6 at the annual
Joseph Henry Science Fair at The College of St. Rose on April 3.
Daniel and William represented the team and
their school at the event, which drew nearly 100 participants from 14
schools in two age groups: grades 4-6 and grades 7-8.
The boys’ project tested whether the weight
of objects affected how far they would travel when launched from the
catapult they built. They tested a potato, a Clementine orange, a golf
ball, a quarter and a ping-pong ball.
They found that the
lightest object, the ping-pong ball, traveled farthest.
The City
School District of Albany serves approximately 8,300 students in 18
elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood
schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as
well as other innovative academic opportunities for students. The
district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities
project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and
middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to
provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in
the 21st century.
