Albany School of Humanities student

recognized as 'Kid of the Week'

ALBANY, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2009) -- Albany School of Humanities sixth-grade student Vaetaria Barcelo was selected as the "Kid of the Week" by B95.5, the Times Union and CapitalNews 9 for the week of Jan. 18-24.

"Kid of the Week" spotlights a Capital Region young person who exhibits positive behavior. Meghan, a seventh-grader at Myers, was recognized for her strong commitment to helping out in her community.

"Vaetaria has an amazing ability to use and interpret sign language," said ASH Spanish teacher Bridgette Madison, who nominated Vaetaria. "During Spanish class she often signs or translates sign language to aide a classmate who is speech impaired. As a Spanish teacher I understand the importance of learning a foreign language and value Vaetaria's skill in using this language.

"She has inspired other students as well as me to use and learn sign language. For her knowledge, assistance and kindness I am grateful to nominate Vaetaria as Kid of the Week."

The City School District of Albany serves approximately 8,400 students in 18 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students. The district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in the 21st century.
