 ALBANY, N.Y. (July 10, 2009) -- Promising
to maintain the City School District of Albany's focus on keeping
students first, Raymond Colucciello, Ed.D., is the district's new
interim superintendent following the July 10 retirement of Eva C.
Joseph, Ed.D.
Dr. Colucciello served as
Schenectady's superintendent from 1993-2001 and has
held interim superintendent positions in several
area districts since then, including Troy, Ballston
Spa and Voorheesville. He brings more than four
decades of experience to Albany as the Board of
Education leads a national search for Dr. Joseph's
permanent successor. The board has appointed Dr.
Colucciello through Dec. 31.
"Let me assure you that as the City School
District of Albany’s interim superintendent, I will focus on two main
objectives that will seem very familiar to you: making sure that we keep
our students first, and relying on the experiences of the strong
leadership team already in place as we work together with the community
to continue the district’s progress," Dr. Colucciello said.

Dr. Joseph retired July 10 following
32 years in public education, including the last 12
in Albany. She spent the last five years as
superintendent, leading the district through the
majority of its facilities project for elementary
and middle schools and spearheading a variety of
programs that have helped raise student achievement
district-wide. She begins Aug. 3 as the new leader
of the Academy of the Holy Names in Albany.
Every elementary and middle school in
the district met its state benchmarks in math and
English language arts for the first time during the
2008-09 school year.

Dr. Colucciello returns
to Albany, where he served for a brief time as interim principal at
Public School 18 (now Delaware Community School) in 2002. He was
Schenectady's superintendent for eight years,
and later spent three years (2005-08) as interim superintendent and
superintendent in Ballston Spa. He served a one-year
term as interim superintendent in Voorheesville during the 2008-09
school year.
He also has served as interim superintendent
in Troy and Schoharie this decade.
"I have seen and been part of many changes
in education during my more than four decades as an educator," he said.
"What has remained constant is our mission – to provide the best
resources and support available to help our students succeed in school
and in life.

opportunity to serve the City School District of Albany. I look forward

building a bright future for the city’s children. My door is always
open."
The mission of the City School District of
Albany is to educate and nurture all students to be
responsible citizens, critical thinkers and lifelong learners to
successfully compete in the global community by providing an
academically rigorous and safe environment in partnership with parents,
students and the community. The district
serves approximately 8,400 students in 16
elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood
schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as
well as other innovative academic opportunities for students.
