Albany High Students Take First Place in Science Bowl, Advance to National Competition

ALBANY, NY (March 2005) Competing against 17 other school districts in the Regional Science Bowl, students from Albany High School brought home the winning trophy and secured a place at the National Science Competition.

Congratulations to team members YeQingTao, James Strassner, Nathan O'Brien, Kai Dallas, and Josh Hancox for a job well done.

The Science Bowl, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and was held at the GE Research Center in Niskayuna, is a timed competition (two, eight-minute sessions) in which students answer multiple choice and short-answer questions about math, science, biology, chemistry, physics, and current scientific events.

The first place win for Albany High's team means that students will advance to the National Science Bowl, held in Washington, D.C. from April 28 to May 2. Students will compete against 64 other regional champions at the upcoming event.

The City School District of Albany serves almost 9,400 students in 19 elementary, middle and high schools. The district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students in addition to neighborhood schools. The district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in the 21st Century.
