Board of Education Approves Opening New Middle School to Grade 8 Students

ALBANY, NY (May 2005) The Albany Board of Education approved a proposal to enroll 215 eight graders at the new middle school and approximately 45 at the district's only K-8 school in September 2005. In an effort to be proactive with regard to NCLB law and to support small schools, the plan will further reduce the number of students at the middle schools by including eighth graders at all three middle schools and School 20.

Under the plan, all current seventh grade students will automatically be entered in the lottery to attend eight grade at the district's new middle school at Kelton Court. However, if students would prefer to stay at their respective middle schools, Hackett or Philip Livingston, they can choose to "opt-out" of the Kelton Court lottery by completing the district's opt-out form. Click here to download the form.

Fill out the form and send it to:

City School District of Albany
Office of Instruction
Academy Park
Albany, NY 12207
Attn: Lisa Connell

The lottery is open to the public and will be held May 26 at 10 a.m. at the Thomas O’Brien Academy of Science and Technology (TOAST) in Lincoln Park. Registration for middle schools will be held in June. More information about registration will be available after the lottery.

Students who reside in the School 20 neighborhood zone may attend eighth grade at School 20 by completing the form that has been mailed home.  Any remaining seats for grade 8 at School 20 will be filled through Open Enrollment. You may apply for Open Enrollment by calling Pupil Personnel Services at (518) 462-7210.
