Who:
Seven high school students with special needs in the City School
District of Albany have been taking part in an intensive commercial
cooking and catering class at the Elks Club kitchen that will train them
for a career in the field.
What:
An open house informing prospective participants about the program
Where:
Elks Lodge, 25 South Allen St., Albany
When:
Friday, March 31, 11:30 a.m. (For photographs of the students baking and
interviews please come to the class at 10:30 a.m.).
Why:
After 600 hours of coursework, the students are placed in a 300-hour
externship. After completion, they are awarded certification from the
New York City-based Culinary Training Institution, which runs the
program.
What else:
The Elks Club is where the classes are held because their kitchen was
made available for the students. It is an interesting partnership -- The
baking the students are doing Friday morning is for an upcoming Elks
party. Class Instructor Allison Clark hopes to use the proceeds so the
class can go out for a three- or four-course meal toward the end of the
course so they can see what they are learning put to practice.
