Six students compete in spelling bee for trip to Washington D.C.

ALBANY – Six students from the City School District of Albany will be competing in a regional spelling bee at the Egg next week for a chance to travel to the national championships in Washington D.C this May.

The students who compete at this level are those who won their classroom, grade level or district-level spelling bee. The building or district winners move on to the regional contest at 6:30 p.m. next Monday, March 13, at the Egg at Empire State Plaza.

In the Capital Region, more than 100 students from more than 60 schools (Grade 4 through Grade 8) compete at the EGG at the Empire State Plaza for a chance to win an all-expense paid trip to Washington to compete at the national event each year.

The CSDA students who will compete in the regional contest are:

Devin Davis, Grade 6 – Myers MS

Marquitta Beasley, Grade 6 – Hacett MS

Sam Purcell, Grade 7 – Myers MS

Jasmin Henry, Grade 7 – North Albany Academy

Samantha Cramer, Grade 8 – PLMA

Matthew Chow, Grade 8 – Hackett MS

These students, along with the other Capital Region students who participate in this Monday’s contest, will compete to win prizes, including savings bonds, book store gift cards, movie passes, dictionaries as well as t-shirts, pens, and recognition certificates at the March Bee.  The Capital Region Spelling Bee is co-sponsored by Capital Region BOCES, the Times Union and the Albany Public Library.  This year, Hannaford Markets, will award the top speller a home or laptop computer.
