Making a difference at Albany High School

ALBANY, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2008) -- Each year the National Association of School Psychologists encourages psychologists nationwide to participate in School Psychology Awareness Week from Nov. 10-14. This year, the association promoted the “Making a Difference” campaign to identify and recognize school faculty and staff members who support the academic, emotional and social growth of students.

Albany High School psychologist Liz Gialanella and her two interns, Danielle Mele and Cherie McDonald, asked students to identify those faculty and staff members who made a difference in their lives. Throughout November, they attended lunch shifts and asked students to fill out ballots identifying a staff or faculty member who had helped them or made their lives better.

The students were encouraged to write a few sentences about how this person had helped them. The ballots were anonymous. More than 300 students made their voices heard and they chose 126 different Albany High faculty and staff members. Each staff member was recognized with a certificate that included the student comments.

Below are the names of all of the Albany High faculty and staff members that were recognized by students – proving once again that there is a lot to be proud of at Albany High!

The City School District of Albany serves approximately 8,400 students in 18 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students. The district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in the 21st century.
