Myers musicians tapped for public concert

ALBANY, N.Y. (March 6, 2012) -- The Empire State Plaza Concourse will echo with sublime sound when the Select Choir and Jazz Band from Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School perform Friday, March 9 at a celebration of school music programs.

The groups will sing and play from 1:15-2 p.m. in the South Concourse, which is located on the New York State Museum side of the Plaza. The performance is free and open to the public. (At right, eighth-grader Kenyatta Williams, on baritone sax, rounds out the Jazz Band's sound at a previous performance.)

The event is part of a statewide effort to promote Music in Our Schools Month, an initiative of the New York State School Music Association. The Myers Select Choir and Jazz Band are among school ensembles from around the state that were chosen to be part of the lunchtime concerts series that will run throughout March on the South Concourse.

The Select Choir is made up of approximately 35 students and the Jazz Band is composed of 37 students. About a dozen talented students perform in both groups.

On Friday, the choir will sing "Good Morning Baltimore," "Joyful, Joyful" and "Phantom of the Opera" and the band will perform "Wipe Out" by the Surfaris and "Dynamite" by Taio Cruz.

The mission of the City School District of Albany is to educate and nurture all students to be responsible citizens, critical thinkers and lifelong learners to successfully compete in the global community by providing an academically rigorous and safe environment in partnership with parents, students and the community.
