Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy celebrated its 2011 field days on
June 14 and 15, and students from
prekindergarten through Grade 5 got a chance to have some summer fun
before vacation officially starts. On the

The community garden across the street from Delaware Community School
had a bovine visitor on May 26 in the
form of Brie, the week-old calf in the photo on the left. Brie was
accompanied by a load of composted cow manure
to keep the garden green, courtesy of the American Dairy

New Scotland Elementary School students exercised their right to

Inspired by a museum exhibit, fifth-graders at New Scotland
Elementary School made their own life-sized “CanStruction”
creations from canned goods. Pictured from left, Tasnim Ahmed,
Tysean Dyer and Isaiah Beatty help their sculpture take shape.
Theirs was one of several exhibits they and their classmates
displayed at the school’s May 17 Writing Celebration. The cans,
donated by the school community, were donated to local food
pantries.

Giffen Memorial
Elementary School held its Giffen Gems Honor Society Induction
on March 29, reconizing students in grades 3-6 who achieved
Level 4 on the state math, ELA, science or social studies test
in 2010. In line to receive their gifts from Home-School
Coordinator Melissa Keen and Assistant Superintendent for Human
Resources and Community Relations Linda Jackson-Chalmers (far
left) are students Stephon Johnson (receiving gift),
Antonio Lacy (middle) and Taliek Lanier (beside the
podium). All district schools are holding ceremonies
through to recognize students who achieved Level 4 on at least
one of the state tests last year.

Graham, a teaching assistant in Albany High School's Abrookin
Vocational-Technical Center, recently received the Director's
Community Leadership award from the FBI. Graham, pictured above
in the center, gets a certifcate from FBI Special Agent Clifford
Holly at a March 29 news conference at Albany High. Also

one of 50+ people from throughout the nation to receive the
award, which goes to people or groups that work to fight crime

Book characters came to life at Delaware Community School on March 24
when the school celebrated "Living
Literature Day." Students and staff dressed as their favorite book

Members of the Albany High School girls' varsity basketball team were
recognized by the Albany Common
Council on March 21. The Lady Falcons earned the Big 10 championship
title for the 2011 season -- a first in
the school's history. The team and coaches pose above at City Hall with
their championship trophy and the
proclamation honoring their feat.
There were plenty of kid-family activities at the annual Pre-K and
Kindergarten Blast, held March 19 at Montessori
Magnet School. While the children kept busy, parents and family
members had the opportunity to get first-hand
information about the full-day early childhood programs and services
available to families in the City School
District of Albany.

New York Times
bestselling author Ellen Hopkins visited Albany
High School on March 16 to talk with students
about her craft, her life and her upcoming novel.
The author of 20 nonfiction books and five teen novels-in-verse,
Hopkins' most popular work, Crank, is a
story about a teen's methamphetamine addiction and based on her
daughter's struggle with the drug. Hopkins talked
with students during a morning assembly and during an
afternoon writers' workshop (above).

celebration. The students were raising awareness
of -- and money for -- a local initiative to build a school for children
in an Ecuadoran rainforest village called

Students at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School received some PMA
--positive mental attitude -- on Dec. 7
from Toby Moore, lead singer of the punk band H2O. Moore brought Myers
his message about living a drug- and

Jarrett J. Krosoczka on Nov. 10. Krosoczka was in town to accept a
Little d Award for his book Lunch Lady and the
Cyborg Substitute, which all the students had already read. In

Albany High
School students and staff donated a record amount of blood to
the local chapter of the American Red Cross on Oct. 20 at the
first of three donation drives the school will hold during
2010-11. Red Cross officials said the 83 pints donated could
save up to 249 lives.. |

Neither rain nor sleet nor cold could keep Delaware Community School
families away from International Family
Math Night on Oct. 15, where kids aged 4 to 80 boned up on their math
skills in English and Spanish.

Students, families and neighbors of Giffen Memorial Elementary School
enjoyed sun, food and fun at the school's
annual Back-to-School Celebration on Sept. 25. On the left, Naveah House
tries to see eye-to-eye with a bird in
the petting zoo, and at right, Jaden Harrison likes what he sees around
him : music, dancing, food, double-dutch,
pony rides and more.
On Sept. 21, Delaware Community School joined millions of people from
around the globe to celebrate Inter-
national Day of Peace. Students made peace pinwheels and banners they
displayed outside the school, and
students, teachers, family members and community members gathered for a
group wish for peace. At left are

Students and a teacher from Stephen and Harriet
Myers Middle School completed a week's worth of crewing the
third week of September on a replica of the ship
Half Moon. They and crewmates from other area schools took
the same voyage
down the Hudson River that Henry Hudson did
in 1609, returning to the port of Albany on Sept.

Everyone likes ice cream, right? At least that was the consensus of the
150-plus people who came to the annual
Montessori Magnet School Ice Cream Social on Sept. 14. On the left,

renovated Arbor Hill Elementary School on
Sept. 7, the first day of school. And at right, Albany High School

immediately.

Arbor Hill community members came out on Aug. 21 for some fun and a
sneak peek at the newly renovated Arbor
Hill Elementary School. At the event, folks enjoyed breakfast, had a
chance to register for the upcoming year, got
information about uniforms, saw the school foyer, gym and cafeteria,
heard music and got freebies from radio sta-
tion Jamz 96.3, got tattooos (temporary ones) and worked off some energy
in a bouncy bounce. Above and at left,

Students in this year's eighth-grade Academy of Engineering summer camp
pose on the bridge they designed and
built over two days in July at Stephen and Harriet Myers

The Academy of Engineering's eighth-grade summer camp
designed and built a bridge to the community garden
at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School between July

camp gave seventh- and eighth-grade students an
opportunity to sample high-tech disciplines like mag-lev techno-
logy, rocket aeronautics, robotics and more, giving them
a taste of what's offered at the Academy of Engineering
at Albany High School.
