Myers Middle School is now home to a 160-square-foot
greenhouse and a host of smaller garden structures, thanks to a
grant from WellPoint Inc., corporate parent to Empire Blue Cross
of Albany. Above, volunteers from Myers and Empire collaborate
on April 28 to build the structures.

These Albany High School students rehearse in the school's
dance studio for their April 22 performance with the University
at Albany's Knemesis dance troupe. The show was a collaboration
between Albany High and UAlbany called "Student-to-Student,"
where high school students were invited to learn alongside some
of UAlbany's premier student performance groups.

Pine Hills Elementary School
second-graders celebrated Arbor Day a day early April 26 with a
tree-planting
project along Western Avenue
near their school. The students took advantage of a sunny
spring morning to plant
pear and oak trees as part of
the Albany Fund for Education's
Project Learning Tree partnership. The City of
Albany purchased the trees and
helped with the planting, along with teaching students from The College
of
St. Rose and representatives
from the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Students in Carol Connelly's life skills class at Albany High School are
all smiles thanks to a $1,000 check the
Central Avenue Hannaford gave them on April 19. The check came courtesy
of the "Hannaford Helps Schools"
program that allowed Hannaford customers that purchased certain
groceries to donate "school dollars" to the
school of their choice. And since Albany High earned the most
dollars -- $327 -- Hannaford rewarded them with a

Fifth-graders from Schuyler Achievement Academy and Montessori
Magnet School who have been each other's
pen pals since September got a chance to meet face-to-face during a
March 8 "Day to Play" at Schuyler. The
Schuyler students taught the Montessori students math games and the
Montessori students taught the Schuyler
students English games. The students will be together again this fall at
Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School.

Albany High School senior Sarah Chamberlain puts bumpers on the
robot the school used during a regional robotics competition on
March 1 in Manchester, N.H. Albany High's Robotics Team was up
against 50 teams from throughout the Northeast during the
three-day competition; the Falcons made it to the quarterfinals.

part of a nationwide effort to determine how tulips grow in
different parts of the country. The work also dovetailed into

Thanksgiving spirit, these Sheridan Preparatory Academy students

during Sheridan Prep's cranberry sauce drive to benefit the
annual Equinox Community Thanksgiving Dinner.

Nov. 17 was the 50th day of the school year, and the
kindergarteners at New Scotland Elementary School marked the day
by dressing up in the fashions of that era: rolled up jeans and
slicked back hair for boys and bobby socks, pony tails and
poodle skirts for girls.

was raised was flown in the band's honor in Washington, D.C.,

Albany High School students from the school's
groundbreaking NanoHigh program meet with Nate Cady, a faculty
member at the UAlbany College of Nanoscale Science and
Engineering. The students visited CNSE on Sept. 14 and were
interviewed for a WMHT program on the effects of nanotechnology
on the Capital Region.

The STEP Summer Institute at UAlbany culminated its intensive
three-week academic program with a closing
ceremony on July 22 at UAlbany. Forty-six middle- and high-school
students received a certificate of compel-

headquarters during summer 2011. His interview with Dr.

On July 13, incoming Albany High School
ninth-graders had the opportunity to be part of an archeological
team conducting an excavation at the site of the Underground
Railroad Project in Albany. The project was part of "A Week at
the Museum Camp," one of
seven summer camp options open to students who will attend
Albany High this fall.

Four recent Albany High School graduates celebrated another sort
of graduation July 13 -- successful completion of Albany High's
Emergency Medical Technician class, a unique partnership with
the city and Albany Fire Department..Displaying their
