public schools!
Umama
Kaurejo, fifth grade
Schuyler Achievement Academy
Umama Kaurejo represents the true meaning of an
exceptional student.
She arrived in the United States from Pakistan on
April 28, 2010 speaking her native language Sindhi. She entered second
grade at Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy on June 1 of that year as
a beginning English-language learner.
By the time she finished third grade -- a little
more than a year after she arrived -- she had mastered English
so well she tested proficient on the New York State English as a
Second Language Achievement Test and did not need English-as-a-second
language classes.
In fourth grade, she continued to seek
extracurricular programs to support language acquisition and reading
skills such as the STAR program and the SMARTIES tutoring program.
Every teacher who comes in contact with Umama
describes her as an enthusiastic learner and focused worker, always
displaying model behavior and serious about her education. Umama’s
favorite subject is science and she hopes to become a surgeon one day.
For these reasons, she is a truly exceptional student.
