Philip J. Schuyler Achievement Academy Receives Preservation  Award from Historic Albany Foundation

ALBANY, NY (May 2005)--At an award ceremony in May, Historic Albany Foundation presented Superintendent Eva Joseph and Albany School District Architect Shawn Hamlin with a Preservation Merit Award for the "rehabilitation and sensitive new addition" at Philip J. Schuyler Achievement Academy, formerly School 21, 676 Clinton Avenue.

"Your commitment to preservation in Albany has been made clear through your efforts," says Historic Albany Foundation Executive Director Elizabeth Griffin.

The Historic Albany Foundation gives annual awards for projects, individuals, or groups that demonstrate excellence, preservation techniques, and initiatives that show a commitment to preserving Albany's architectural heritage.

As part of the district's multi-year facilities project, former School 21--which had not been used by district since 1997--was restored and expanded to become Philip J. Schuyler Achievement Academy.

The school was opened at the beginning of the 2004-05 school year with a ribbon cutting ceremony and tours of the building. If you would like to tour the school, please call 427-2320.

Schuyler Achievement Academy is a neighborhood school serving 450 grades K-5 students.

The City School District of Albany serves almost 9,400 students in 19 elementary, middle and high schools. The district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students in addition to neighborhood schools. The district is more than halfway through its comprehensive facilities project to newly build and/or renovate nearly all of its elementary and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in the 21st Century.
