A year of achievement
There is much on which to reflect as we look back on 2007-08. Our
achievements were many as we continue to advance our mission to educate
and nurture all students to be responsible citizens, critical thinkers
and lifelong learners.
The
strategic planning initiative we began in November is progressing as
our action teams turn a thoughtful and comprehensive lens on the future.
It truly has been a community partnership and we look forward to sharing
the results of this important work.
We continued to expand our partnerships to broaden the already diverse
array of academic and career opportunities available to all of our
students. New partners included Excelsior College, Mildred Elley and
Turner Construction Co., and we are grateful for their support and
expertise.
Our partnership with the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education
hit a resounding high note in March when the
NUA’s
annual conference showcased the great work our teachers and staff do
on behalf of our city’s children.
We were gratified this spring when the New York State Department of
Education
recognized eight of our schools with the “rapidly improving”
designation.
The state’s designation of Philip Livingston Magnet Academy as a School
Under Registration Review was a firm reminder of the need for continuous
improvement district-wide. Nevertheless, we are eager to do that work at
Livingston and in all of our schools through the dedication of our
talented and caring teachers and staff.
We will look to 2008-09 without some familiar leaders.
Principals Kathleen Brown (Eagle Point Elementary School), Kathleen
Mrozak, Ed.D. (Montessori Magnet School) and Rachelle Salerno, Ed.D.
(Thomas O’Brien Academy of Science and Technology) are retiring and will
be missed, as will Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education
Joseph P. Dragone, Ph.D., who is leaving us to become superintendent in
Ballston Spa.
I
also would like to welcome two new members of our administrative
leadership team – assistant superintendents Tresa Diggs, Ed.D.
(elementary education) and William F. Hogan (business affairs).
We are well underway in our planning for 2008-09 thanks to your support
in May’s budget vote. We are most appreciative that you value the
programs and services we provide for our city’s young people.
We are looking forward to reopening William S. Hackett Middle School
(September) and New Scotland Elementary School (the former School 19, in
January), as well as continued progress in our facilities project at
Arbor Hill Elementary School, Giffen Memorial Elementary School and
TOAST.
Keep an eye out for information regarding August orientation programs
for middle and high school students, and we hope our summer reading
program helps everyone realize the joy of good books.
Have a wonderful summer!
Eva C. Joseph, Ed.D.
