Message from the Superintendent

April 27, 2005
The Albany Public Schools are working hard to keep our students safe.

To ensure that students and their families understand the safety and security policies currently in place at all of our schools, we reviewed these policies at our April 14 meeting with the Board of Education. We also discussed new strategies and heard from parents and community leaders.

First and foremost, the district has in place an overall Student Discipline & Conduct Policy. This policy is enforced in all of our schools and includes expectations of student behavior, a progressive disciplinary policy, and information about our zero tolerance policy with regard to violence.

In addition, we heard from parents and listened to their concerns and ideas about how to address safety and security issues; we also discussed the range of after-school activities available to our students.

The district is currently considering several new strategies to keep students safe, including:

  • Adopting a random search policy;

  • Expanding after-school offerings for students; and

  • Creating more small school environments for students by admitting 8th graders to the new middle school at Kelton Court next year and reducing the number of students at Hackett Middle School and Philip Livingston Magnet Academy.

Please check back soon to learn more about our efforts to keep all of our students safe and for the dates and times of upcoming meetings.
