Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School
100 Elbel Court
On August 25, 2005, the City School
District of Albany celebrated the opening of its newest small middle
school. The new three-story middle school is 140,000 square feet.
It will be home to no more than 650 students in grades 6-8. Students in
each grade are divided into teams of up to 115 students each. Sixth,
seventh and eighth graders are separated by floor. To see photos of the
school, visit the
Myers Photo Gallery.
Stephen and Harriet Myers
Middle School is home to many facilities also available to its
neighbors, including a 25-yard, six-lane pool, gym, 650-seat auditorium,
and library with computer resource room.
Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School
is an integral part of the district's plan to improve middle-level
education by providing all students with smaller, stronger, and safer
learning environments.
Project history
After reviewing several
construction sites over more than four years, the Board of Education
chose the 18.6 acre site adjacent to Kelton Court near Whitehall Road.
Voters had originally approved locating the new middle school at the
edge of Westland Hills Park, but the district found that it would
require additional environmental approvals to build at the site and
might cause delays.
As a
result, the board asked voters to approve the purchase of the current
site; voters approved the purchase in June 2003.
